Why do I need a contact lens exam each year?
Annual examinations are important for the health of your eye. We want to make sure that your lenses are still fitting properly, and not over-wearing them. We’ll check for any swelling or irritation in the eye. We’ll make sure that the lenses you’re wearing are letting enough oxygen into your eye (we can make adjustments in the materials of your lenses if that’s a problem). There are many situations and conditions that can impact the health of your cornea. An annual exam helps us find them and correct them as soon as possible.
What Is A Contact Lens Fitting?
A contact lens evaluation and fitting consists of:
Evaluating the fit, centration and movement of the lenses on the eye.
Evaluating the curvature of your cornea to verify you are wearing the type of lens most appropriate for your eye and to evaluate if your prescription is too weak or too strong.
Additional examination of the eyes to look for possible complications related to contact lens wear.
There are many different types of contact lenses and the goal of the contact lens fitting is to find the most appropriate contact lens for your optimal vision and comfort. Although most patients need only one follow up exam, some require several appointments to finalize their prescription.
What Is Included In My Fitting Fee?
The fitting fee includes up to 3 contact lens follow-up visits within 60 days of your original exam and includes all trial lenses. If it takes more than 3 visits or greater than 60 days to finalize your prescription, a $25.00 fee is applied per visit.
How Much Is My Fitting Fee?
Contact lens fitting fees start at $40.00 and increase depending upon the type of lenses your doctor recommends and the complexity of the fit.
Does My Insurance Cover The Fitting Fee?
Insurance companies deem contact lenses as a cosmetic form of vision correction. You may choose to utilize your contact lens benefit to pay for the fitting fee. However we do not recommend this as it reduces your amount available for the purchase of your lenses.
My Prescription Hasn’t Changed. Why Am I Still Charged A Fee?
The contact lens exam is more extensive than a basic vision exam. This contact lens fee is a usual and customary fee in the optical industry.
Peepers Optical recommends a yearly comprehensive eye exam in order to maintain healthy vision. In compliance with the State of Colorado prescription laws, YOUR CONTACT LENS PRESCRIPTION EXPIRES YEARLY FROM YOUR FIRST INITIAL VISIT. YOUR EYEGLASS PRESCRIPTION EXPIRES EVERY 2 YEARS.
What is a good age for my child to get contacts?
Wearing contacts is really a matter of maturity level or responsibility rather than age. We’ve had children as young as seven or eight years old wearing contacts, but most children are usually 10 or older before they’re ready to take on the responsibilities of wearing lenses. (They’ll need to keep the lenses clean and thoroughly wash their hands before putting the contacts in, for example.) We’ll be glad to talk with you and your child to help you decide if he/she is ready for contacts.
Are all contact lens solutions the same?
No. Always use the solutions we recommend. Certain solutions are definitely superior to others, and are able to get rid of potential bacteria that could contaminate your contact lenses and cause infection.
